The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Timisoara (UMFT), was established in 1945 by the Royal Decree nr.660/December 1944, as a state institution, part of the Western University. UMFT has 3 faculties: General Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. Five years ago there was created the University Medical College with 2 specializations: Dental Technique and Dental Hygienists.

UMFT also offers postgraduate studies: PhD and specialization in various domains.

Scientific research, supported by modern equipment, covers  both fundamental and clinical research, some students are involved in these activities.

The Faculty of Dentistry has two sections: the Romanian language section and the English language one.

The English language section started its activities in 1999/2000.

There are also possibilities for the foreign students to learn the  Romanian language. A preparatory year is recommended in such cases. This kind of training can be done in some situations even in the countries of origin (Israel, Greece, etc). A Romanian language test would be necessary in this case.

The English language section students have to learn the Romanian language  during the first three years of study so that they can treat the patients starting with the fourth year of study.

Educational Structure

Medical studies in the Faculty of Dentistry are completed in 6 years with 2 semesters per year. An academic year comprises 10 months: two semesters, each with 14 weeks of classes, followed each by an exam session (3 or 4 weeks) and a summer medical practice of 3 weeks.

The studies end with a license examination and upon successful completion, a physician diploma is awarded (Dr.med.stom). The studies at the Universitary Medical College are completed in 3 years and they are  finished by an graduating exam.

The Faculty of Dentistry from Timisoara is member of the ADEE (Association of Dental Education in Europe) being the only Faculty of Dentistry in Romania included in the DentEd (Dental Education) program.

Our Faculty is aligned at the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) beginning with the academic year 1997/1998; awarding 20 credits for each semester. The six years of study are divided into three cycles of two years each. All the 80 credits of the cycle must be obtained for entering the next cycle. Within the cycle, at least 20 credits must be obtained for passing into the second year of  the cycle. Each course of each semester corresponds to a certain number of credits.

The academic year structure is:

- first semester 1 Oct - 29 Jan (3 weeks Christmas holiday included).

- winter exam session: 29 Jan - 19 Feb (1 week holiday).

- second semester: 28 Feb - 4 June (a 3-day holiday included).

- summer exam session: 5 June- 2 July.

- summer practical activities in hospital or dental practice: 3-23 July.
