International Practical Seminar in Ocular Microsurgery as part of the Romanian Training Program in Microsurgery

Introduction
Microsurgical techniques are being incresingly applied in almost all surgical disciplines making it essential for the surgeon to continuously train and develop his skills. However, the opportunities of learning them in a structured course are rare. Pius Branzeu Center for Laparoscopic Surgery and Microsurgery comes to meet this demands by offering a complete program for trainig, with professional instructors and complete microsurgical equipment.

Material and Methods
The training programe in ocular microsurgery mets the needs of the young doctors who wants to master their surgical techniques. In this four days long seminar, the early mornings are spent with lectures about ophthalmological and microsurgical techniques with particular interest to clinical use. The course provides a total of 32 hours for evaluating the ocular microsurgical procedures.
Every participant has it's own practice table completely equipped with operating microscope, instruments and materials. The foreseen exercises will be performed under the supervision of qualified instructors.
At the completion of the course, each participant will be awarded a certificate by the Ministry of Education and Research. The course is acredited by the Romanian College of Physicians with 18 CME hours.

Discussions
The enthusiasm in participating in these courses for both trainees and instructors demonstrates teh usefulness of this instructional activity. Microsurgicaltraining is valuble for every surgeon because it allows:
- the execution of experimental procedures and research on live animal models
- the ability to perform repeatedly and in a short time the same micosurgical procedure
- to rapidly improve one's surgical skills
- to get easily familiar with microinstruments and sutures

Conclusions
The specific experience gained in the laboratory by precisely handling and operating the tissues proves to be extremely useful in the clinical practice with no regards of the surgeon's previous background.
