The Oro-Dental Diagnosis and Ergonomics Clinic plays a fundamental role in the early professional development of future dental practitioners. It has been integrated into the curriculum of the Faculty of Dental Medicine since the 2004–2005 academic year, in alignment with European standards in medical education.
In the first semester, the disciplines are delivered to second-year students enrolled in the Dentistry study program (Romanian and English tracks), under the titles Dental Ergonomics and Oro-Dental Diagnosis. During the same semester, sixth-year students from both study programs may attend the optional course Activities Organization in Dental Offices, designed to consolidate competencies related to professional management, organization, and administrative responsibilities within dental practice.
In the second semester, Dental Ergonomics is included in the curriculum of the third year of the Dental Technology study program, as well as in the third year of the Dental Prophylaxis Assistance study program, through the course Ergonomics. Dental Office Management.
The discipline of Oro-Dental Diagnosis aims to develop a structured and comprehensive approach to clinical assessment, to strengthen patient–doctor communication skills, and to ensure the accurate acquisition of examination techniques. These competencies constitute the foundation for establishing a correct diagnosis and for formulating an appropriate and effective treatment plan.
The discipline of Dental Ergonomics focuses on adapting the working environment to the functional and biomechanical demands of dental practice, with the primary objective of preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders commonly associated with prolonged static postures. Students are instructed in optimal working posture, appropriate positioning of both patient and operator, efficient use of instrumentation, adequate lighting, and the principles of functional dental office design. The educational approach extends beyond physical ergonomics, incorporating cognitive and organizational dimensions of clinical activity, thereby contributing to improved efficiency, safety, and quality of care.
The curriculum is continuously updated to ensure that students acquire not only solid theoretical knowledge but also practical competencies that become integrated into their professional conduct. These skills are essential for preserving the long-term health of the dental practitioner and for ensuring efficient, sustainable, and high-quality clinical practice.
Teaching activities are conducted both in dedicated departmental facilities and in shared clinical environments alongside other specialties, thereby facilitating the integration of ergonomics and oro-dental diagnosis within the practical framework of contemporary dental medicine.
