At the discipline of oral and maxillo-facial surgery of the Faculty of Dental Medicine, teaching, research and surgical activity is carried out.
For theoretical and practical training, students benefit from a Clinic consisting of:
- a hospital with 13 wards, 40 beds
- 3 ambulatory surgery rooms (6 dental units)
- consultation room (2 dental units)
- surgical dressing room
- emergency surgery room (2 dental units)
- small surgery room (2 dental units)
- operating theatre with two aseptic operating theatres and one septic operating theatre
- training and lecture rooms for theoretical work
The quality of university education is ensured by experienced teachers, members of national and international associations and societies and young teachers, who will constitute the generation exchange of the discipline. The teaching activity consists of lectures and practical internship. The practical internships include presentations of clinical cases, consultation and care of patients, small surgical maneuvers, workshops, etc.

Members of the discipline have developed and edited courses and books. Scientific papers have been published in national and international journals. Members of the discipline have also participated with oral scientific papers and posters in symposia, conferences and congresses in the country and abroad.
More than 500 graduates have completed diploma work in the discipline of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Numerous doctors from different medical specialties defended their doctoral thesis in the discipline of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The members of the discipline have had a rich activity within the Romanian Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, constantly participating in its activities (courses, congresses). In 1996, the 3rd National Congress of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was organized in Timisoara, and between 1996 and 1998, the Presidency and the Secretariat of the Romanian Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery functioned in Timisoara.
In 2009, the “International course of European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery” was organized in Timisoara, with the participation of Prof. Julio Acero (Spain) and Prof. Karsten Gundlach (Germany).
Between 2012 and 2017 the “Oral Health Monitoring and Control Programme in Timisoara” was carried out, in partnership with Timisoara City Hall and Timis County School Inspectorate.
In 2014 and 2017, International Sessions on oral and maxillo-facial malformations were organized in the framework of the International Conferences organized by the Pediatric Surgery Clinic, with the participation of leading personalities of oral and maxillo-facial surgery: Prof. Srinivas Gosla Reddy (India), Prof. Dr. Benito Ramos Medina (Spain), Prof. Hakan Agir (Turkey), Prof. Stefaan Berge (Netherlands), Prof. Maurice Mommaerts (Belgium).
In 2017 the course “AO -Foundation Traumatology” was held by Prof. Srinivas Gosla Reddy (India).
In 2018 the course “Orthognatic surgery” for physicians was held by Prof. Srinivas Gosla Reddy (India), Prof. Sharadindu Kotrashetti (India), Prof. Dr. Benito Ramos Medina (Spain).
In 2019, in collaboration with UMF “V. Babeș” and the Pediatric Surgery Clinic, a course for physicians was organized on the occasion of the Visiting Professor of UMF “V. Babeș” for Prof. Srinivas Gosla Reddy (India) and Prof. Hakan Agir (Turkey).
The RO-HU project “IMPROVING HEALTH-CARE SERVICES THROUGH INNOVATIVE RO-HU SURGICAL IDEAS” is ongoing between 2020-2022, with the participation of some of the discipline’s teaching staff, in collaboration with the “Pius Branzeu” Emergency Clinical Hospital of Timisoara and the University of Medicine of Szeged.
The history of the discipline of oral and maxillo-facial surgery in Timișoara includes events and achievements that have raised the discipline to a good level of local, national and international recognition. Students and specialists trained in the discipline have honored the medical profession for which they trained, in Romania or in their home countries.
