General presentation

Department I of the Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara has only one branch of science, that of “Anatomy and Embryology”. From the human resource point of view, the department consists of 31 professors, 4 laboratory assistants and 1 secretary.

The Anatomy study department of the university dates back to 1945, the same year the university started functioning.

The first head of the Anatomy Department, Professor Zalman Iagnov, established a modern management style with functional and evolutionary features, a style very tied to the medico-surgical activity. It started with a small number of basic materials received from the Faculty of Medicine from Bucharest, but in time they managed to arrange large and hygienic workrooms, cadaver labs, anatomical museum and also a library of the anatomy lab.

Prof. Iagnov was the head of the department between 1945-1953, being the one that laid the foundation of the anatomical scientific research and the one that conducted – in the Microscopy Lab – anatomic injections aimed to produce corrosions preparations.

Between 1953 – 1968, the Anatomy Department was led by Prof. Dr Gheorghe Corondan, who came from the Papilian School and who received a lot of help from the Head of Projects, Dr. Ion Albu (1951-1964), who was also part of the Cluj-based school.

The activity overall was based on the subject of the evolutionary and functional morphology, highlighting the interrelations and interdependence between form and function. By making permanent the relation with the medical practice, another management type of the anatomical education was formed, management typical to Timisoara’s medical history. The Heads of the Department coming after Prof. Corondan, were the following academicians: Benedict Menkes, Leonida Georgescu and the lecturer Nicolae Rottenberg.

Between 1990-2008, the Anatomy Department was led by Prof. Dr. Virgiliu Niculescu, member of The Academy of Medical Sciences Romania and president of the Romanian Society of Anatomy.

Between 2008- 2015, The Department I of the Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Anatomy and Embryology Discipline was led by Univ. Prof. Dr. Med. Motoc Andrei.

Starting December 2015, the department is led by Univ. Prof. Dr. Med. Sorin Bolintineanu.
