The University Department of Pharmacognosy – Phytotherapy brings together a complex of pharmaceutical sciences, integrating both fundamental and applied knowledge about plant-based products with therapeutic or dermato-cosmetic uses. The University Department of Pharmacognosy was established in 1993, alongside the development of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Timișoara. Starting in 2015, the discipline has been coordinated by Prof. Dr. Pharm. Corina Danciu, who, together with the department staff, has consistently contributed to strengthening teaching activities and expanding scientific visibility. In 2024, the discipline was renamed and now has the title University Department of Pharmacognosy – Phytotherapy.
Pharmacognosy is a science with a pronounced interdisciplinary character, positioned at the intersection of botany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, phytotherapy, and related fields. The discipline studies medicinal plants as sources of active compounds—oses, polyholosides, polyphenolic derivatives, glycosides, terpenic compounds, alkaloids—by examining their botanical, biochemical, and therapeutic characteristics. From this perspective, through its fundamental subjects, Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy contribute to understanding the mechanisms through which plant-based products can be used for medicinal or cosmetic purposes, integrating theoretical principles with practical applications relevant to the pharmaceutical profession.
The main educational objectives of the University Department of Pharmacognosy – Phytotherapy focus on developing an in-depth understanding of plant-derived products of pharmaceutical interest, the bioactive compounds they contain, and how they can be used in phytotherapy or dermato-cosmetology. The study of disciplines included in Pharmacognosy aims at recognizing and identifying plant raw materials, understanding phytochemical composition, applying extraction and analytical methods, and correlating natural active principles with their pharmacological actions. Through these competencies, future pharmacists, pharmacy assistants, and cosmetologists gain a comprehensive perspective on the role of medicinal plants in preventing and treating various conditions, as well as on their safe use in pharmaceutical practice.
Upon completing their university studies and the disciplines taught within the Department of Pharmacognosy–Phytotherapy, specialists trained in the Faculty of Pharmacy’s programs will be able to accurately evaluate the quality of plant-based products, identify active compounds, recommend appropriate phytopreparations, and provide guidance regarding therapeutic doses, possible adverse effects, interactions with synthetic drugs, and the limits of phytotherapy. The disciplines within our department thus contribute to developing critical and applied thinking, indispensable for effective communication with patients and for integrating phytotherapy into modern pharmaceutical practice.
The University Department of Pharmacognosy – Phytotherapy offers a rich curriculum within bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, contributing to the professional and scientific development of students at the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Master’s Studies
Starting with the academic year 2025–2026, the Faculty of Pharmacy offers advanced studies through the two-year master’s program “Applied Phytotherapy”, coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Avram Ștefana. The program focuses on deepening knowledge regarding the therapeutic use of plant-based products and emphasizes modern methods of analysis, extraction, and formulation, preparing specialists capable of developing and evaluating safe and effective phytopreparations adapted to current pharmaceutical requirements.
Members of the department serve as lecturers in the master’s programs of the Faculty of Pharmacy, UMFVBT, teaching courses, practical works, and seminars in various disciplines.
Doctoral Studies
Doctoral training has been provided since 2018 by Prof. Dr. Pharm. Corina Danciu, within research directions dedicated to natural products with therapeutic potential and the development of innovative strategies in the pharmaceutical field.
Prof. Univ. Dr. Corina Danciu supervises bachelor’s theses, dissertations, and doctoral theses. Members of the discipline supervise annually a significant number of bachelor’s theses from graduates of the Faculty of Pharmacy—Romanian and French sections—and graduates of short-term study programs (ASF-D and CM), as well as annual dissertations.
VADA Program
Through the student volunteer program “Volunteering in Academic Development Activities” (VADA), conducted at the “Victor Babeș” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara since 2017, each year numerous high-performing students from both the Romanian and French sections participate in didactic and research activities within the University Department of Pharmacognosy–Phytotherapy.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ștefana Avram and Prof. Univ. Dr. Corina Danciu, together with department members, organized between February 17–19, 2025, the first edition in a series of continuing education and professional development events held within the Department of Pharmacognosy – Phytotherapy (FitoLab), titled:
“FitoLab Workshop 1: Improving Spectrophotometric Techniques in Plant Product Analysis.”
The Pharmacognosy–Phytotherapy discipline conducts intensive research within the Research and Processing Center for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (Plant-Med), established on April 24, 2024. The center is equipped with modern infrastructure allowing:
- processing plant raw materials, obtaining extracts, and isolating bioactive compounds;
- physicochemical characterization of extracts and natural compounds;
- evaluation of biological activity in vitro and in vivo, with emphasis on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and chemopreventive effects.
Research focuses on pharmacognostic studies of species from wild and cultivated flora, as well as the analysis of natural compounds such as polyphenols and triterpenes. The activity is supported by students from years III–V, master’s students, and PhD candidates, integrated into research projects and in the preparation of bachelor’s, dissertation, and doctoral theses.
Members of the discipline collaborate with prestigious universities and institutes in Romania and abroad, and are actively involved in professional organizations and editorial boards of ISI-indexed scientific journals, contributing to the visibility and impact of research conducted at the Plant-Med center.
