General presentation

The discipline of Pharmacognosy exists since 1993, from the beginning of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Timisoara. Since 2015, until now, the discipline is coordinated by Prof. dr. Pharm. Danciu Corina.

The lectures and practical works of Pharmacognosy take place over two semesters and are addressed to students in the third year of study within the Pharmacy Specialization for both the Romanian and French section. Within the same discipline, the courses Plant products and phytopreparations in dermato-cosmetology (semester 1, year 1) and Products of plant origin in cosmetics (semester 2, year 2) are taught for the program Medical Cosmetics and Technology of the Cosmetic Product. For the programme Pharmacy Assistance, during the first semester, the course Plant Products and the course Phytotherapy are mandatory subjects in the second year of study. The optional course Minerals and vitamins in plant resources is addressed to second-year students, section Romanian and French.

By its definition, Pharmacognosy correlates aspects of pharmacobotany, phytochemistry and phytotherapy, through multiple interdisciplinary connections regarding medicinal plants as sources of active compounds with therapeutic or dermato-cosmetic applicability. Pharmacognosy studies medicinal plants classified according to the major classes of active principles contained, such as: oses, polyholosides, polyphenolic derivatives (phenolic acids, phenylacrylic acids, lignans, flavonoids, tannins), glycosides, terpenoids, alkaloids.

Regarding the educational mission, the main objectives of the discipline are for students to acquire knowledge related to the recognition, identification and obtaining of plant products used in phytotherapy or dermato-cosmetology, reviewing the botanical characteristics of the plant species of interest, understanding their chemical composition, extraction methods, phytochemical analysis of plant products and extracts of medicinal plants,  as well as association of these products with pharmacological actions and phytotherapeutic uses, as well as the knowledge of adverse effects of vegetal extracts, respectively of pure natural substances.

Within the practicals of Pharmacognosy, students learn extraction methods, methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis of plant products, in order to perform quality control analysis of these products. The identification and dosage of active principles is carried out by chemical reactions, chromatographic, spectrophotometric and/or biological methods. Also, students learn the ability to associate various pathologies with possible phytotherapeutic remedies, thus associating various classes of active principles with specific symptoms. In order to aquire good abilities to advise patients regarding the use of phytopreparations, the analysis of  pharmaceutical forms containing natural active principles is thought and the acquisition of therapeutic/toxic doses, as well as interactions between active principles – medicines, food.

Through the volunteer program for students “Volunteering in academic development activity” (VADA), carried out at the “Victor Babeș” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara since 2017, every year many students with good academic results, both from the Romanian and French sections, participate in the educational and research activity carried out within the discipline of Pharmacognosy.

The members of the discipline are lecturers in the master programs of the Faculty of Pharmacy, UMFVBT.  PhD training is provided by Prof. dr. farm. Corina Danciu starting with 2018.

Scientific activity

The research activity of the discipline aims at pharmacognostic study of different species of spontaneous flora and culture, in terms of chemical composition and pharmaco-toxicological activity. The team of the discipline carries out complex studies on the biological activity of various vegetal extracts and natural compounds such as polyphenols, triterpenes, by in vitro and in vivo methods, in order to establish their antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic, antibacterial action. These researches are also carried out with the active participation of students in years III, IV and V in order to achieve their bachelor’s or dissertation thesis, as well as within the doctoral studies carried out within the discipline of Pharmacognosy.

Members of the Pharmacognosy discipline collaborate with prestigious universities from Romania and abroad. The members of the discipline are affiliated to various national and international professional organizations, respectively they are part of the editorial board of ISI publications (CV).
