Head of Discipline
Members
The discipline of Pharmacognosy exists since 1993, from the beginning of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Timisoara. It was initially coordinated by Pharm. Handrea Dafin. Subsequently, heads of the discipline were Lect. Pharm. Toma Claudia-Crina, PhD, and from 2008 to 2014 †Lect. Pharm. Peev Camelia, PhD. The discipline was then coordinated by Lect. Avram Ștefana, PhD, and since 2015 by Prof. Danciu Corina, PhD.
The lectures and practical classes of Pharmacognosy are addressed to the students from the 3rd year of study within the Pharmacy Bachelor Program, in Romanian and in French, respectively to the students from the 2nd year within the Pharmaceutical Assistance (Lugoj) under the name of Vegetal Products. The subject of Phytotherapy is also taught within the Discipline of Pharmacognosy, being addressed to the students of the 3rd year of study within the Pharmacy Bachelor Program, both in Romanian and in French, respectively to the students from the 2nd year within the Pharmaceutical Assistance (Lugoj).
Pharmacognosy is an interdisciplinarry discipline, correlating features from domains such as botany, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, achieving multiple connections regarding medicinal plants as sources of active compounds with therapeutic applicability. Pharmacognosy studies medicinal plants according to the classes of active phytocompounds such as carbohydrates, phenolic derivatives (phenylpropenes, lignans, flavonoids, tannins), terpenes, glycosides, alkaloids.
Teaching Pharmacognosy involves acquiring knowledge related to identifying and obtaining vegetal products or crude drugs used in phytotherapy, recognizing the botanical characteristics and knowing their chemical composition, as well as being able to perform phytochemical analysis. Also, by attending our discipline’s lectures and practicals, students should be able to correctly associate natural products with pharmacological activities and therapeutic uses, next to their possible side effects and precautions.
Within the practical classes of Pharmacognosy, the students learn various extraction methods, qualitative and quantitative analysis assays for crude drugs, in order to carry out the quality control of these products. The identification and dosing of the active phytocompounds is carried out by chemical reactions, chromatographic, spectrophotometric and/or biological methods. Also, in the framework of phytotherapy practical classes, students learn the ability to associate various pathologies with possible phytotherapeutic remedies, thus achieving the association of various classes of active principles with specific symptomatology. In order to provide good counseling skills for patients regarding the use of phytopreparations, students learn about pharmaceutical formulations containing natural active compounds or extracts, therapeutic / toxic doses, as well as possible interactions between active compounds – drugs or food.
Through the volunteering program for students “Volunteering in the academic development activity” (VADA), carried out at the “Victor Babeș” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara since 2017, many students with good results, both from the Romanian and the French section, participate every year in the teaching and research process within the Pharmacognosy Discipline.
The members of the discipline are lecturers in the master’s programs of the Faculty of Pharmacy, UMFVBT, for various subjects.
PhD training is provided by Prof. dr. pharm. Corina Danciu starting with 2018.
The research activity of the discipline is focused on the pharmacognostic study of different species from wild and cultured flora, in terms of chemical composition and pharmaco-toxicological activity. The team of the discipline carries out complex studies on the biological activity of extracts and natural compounds such as polyphenols, triterpenes, by in vitro and in vivo methods, in order to establish the antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic, antibacterial actions. Students from the 3rd , 4rd and 5th year also participate in the research process in order to carry out the bachelor’s or dissertation thesis, as well as within the doctoral studies carried out within the discipline of Pharmacognosy.
Members of the discipline of Pharmacognosy collaborate with prestigious universities in the country and from abroad and are affiliated to various national and international professional organizations, being also part of the editorial staff of some ISI publications (CV).
