Name of the research center: Center for Research and Innovation in Personalized Medicine of Respiratory Diseases

Director of the research center: Associate Professor MD PhD Ovidiu Fira-Mladinescu

Date of establishment/ acknowledgement: 05.03.2021

Research areas/ research opportunities:

In the spirit of the Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy, from Timișoara, our center has developed over time a culture of research and concerns for capitalizing on research results for the health of our fellow human beings.

The main directions and concerns of scientific research have focused on essential pathologies in the field of Pulmonology, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sleep disorders, diffuse interstitial pneumonia, and recently in the dramatic context of the global pandemic with COVID-19, new methods of approach to disease management and therapy. The purpose of these approaches was to constantly bring key, innovative information, highly competitive with any of a prestigious international research center. Our center is currently involved in several research projects, some of which are ongoing, others are about to begin – using interdisciplinary and international teams.

We will briefly address them as follows: it’s going to start

1. SARS-CoV2 infection 1.1. Evaluation of the anti-inflammatory effects of trans-cranial vagus nerve electrostimulation in patients with COVID-19 in the imminent cytokine storm; 1.2. Evaluation of glycemic profile in patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in a given period.

2. Sleep medicine 2.1. Exploration of the lipid profile in patients with sleep apnea syndrome.

3. Diffuse interstitial pneumonia 3.1. Creating a new concept of computer-aided diagnosis in diffuse interstitial pneumonia using AI (artificial intelligence); 3.2. Use of a medical platform for the diagnosis of Diffuse Interstitial Pneumonia (PID Second Opinion) -through an interdisciplinary team of pulmonologists and radiologists, offers the possibility of evaluating patient imaging data and developing a diagnostic opinion by interdisciplinary consensus; 3.3. Multidisciplinary discussion of cases of diffuse interstitial pneumonia encountered in medical practice organized monthly, online; 3.4. Creating a medical platform for tele-monitoring patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

We will be and will remain a versatile Research Center, with high levels of performance and openness to further develop collaborations with key partners in the medical field.
