Name of the research center: The ANAPATMOL research center

Director of the research center: Professor MD PhD Alis DEMA

Date of establishment/ acknowledgement: 05.03.2021

Research areas/ research opportunities:

The ANAPATMOL research center brings together personnel from the Disciplines of Morphopathology and Molecular and Cell Biology – Department II of the the “Victor Babeş” University of Medicine and Pharmacy from Timisoara and includes 37 members: teaching/research staff on permanent contract, PhD students, resident MDs and non-teaching staff.

Inside the ANAPATMOL center, scientific research activities and high competency specialty assistance are carried out, in anatomic pathology and molecular biology.

The facilities of the center allow collaborations for:

  • Processing of cytological and tissue samples for diagnostic purposes;
  • Staining of histological specimens with usual stains, histochemical and immunohistochemical stain (employing both manual and automated techniques), immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization;
  • In vitro testing of biocompatibility/cytotoxicity of various biological and synthetic compounds;
  • Quantitative analysis of biomarkers, using ELISA technique;
  • Gene expression analysis;
  • Histological slides scanning and hosting on own servers for remote access;
  • Manual and automated image analysis for transmission, polarized and fluorescent microscopy (including whole slide images);
  • Hosting of virtual microscopy work-shops (3 rooms, total capacity 81 participants).

The ANAPATMOL research center aims to address the following research topics:

  • The study of immunohistochemical and molecular markers of diagnostic, prognostic and predictive value in various types of tumors: colorectal, breast, thyroid, kidney, urinary bladder, neuroendocrine and central nervous system tumors;
  • Deployment and expansion of digital pathology techniques for diagnostic and teaching purposes;
  • Computer assisted quantification of various parameters highlighted with immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization techniques;
  • The study of some lesions and their time-based evolution, using animal experimental models;
  • The study of genes associated with metabolic diseases: obesity, diabetes mellitus;
  • The study of xenobiotics and biologically active compounds on prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell systems.
