General presentation

Starting with the academic year of 1992/1993, through the sustained effort of Mrs. Prof.Univ.Dr. Hortensia Ioniţă, the Discipline of Clinical Hematology was established within the internal medicine module of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Victor Babeş” from Timişoara. She was Head of Discipline until her retirement in 2018. Starting with the 2014/2015, the hematology discipline becomes an independent discipline.

In 1993, the Hematology Clinic was established within the Timişoara Clinical Municipality Emergency Hospital, by transforming the Hematology Ward, with its bases laid by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ludovic Roth, an outstanding personality of Romanian hematology and founder of the Timisoara School of Hematology. After the retirement of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ludovic Roth, Prof. Univ. Dr. Hortensia Ioniţă coordinated the activity of the Hematology Clinic until 2018.

Since 1994, a clinical laboratory compartment has been set up next to the Hematology Clinic, intended for conducting tests for clinical trials and for research activities. Currently, the laboratory of the clinic comprises three subunits, namely: medullary hematological cytomorphology, peripheral blood cytomorphology and hemostasis. Currently, the Clinical Hematology Laboratory has been incorporated into the general SCMUT Laboratory. Equipping the laboratory with high-performance equipment and highly qualified staff,  makes it possible to train laboratory residents and physicians in the field of laboratory hematology – the only unit of its kind in the southwest of the country, currently the Hematology Clinic is equipped with a number of 55 beds. Since December 2019, the Hematology Clinic has an extremely useful Flow-Cytometer utilized in the diagnosis of malignant hematological diseases and scientific research.

The Hematology Department team is made up of nine members, holders of the title of doctor in medical sciences or doctoral students, having as Head of Discipline Mrs. Conf. Univ. Dr. Ioana Ionita since 2018. Mrs. Prof. Univ Dr. Hortensia Ioniţă is a doctoral supervisor since 1998, having so far 30 doctoral thesis led and validated with the title of doctor in medical sciences.

The preoccupations of the Clinical Hematology Department team are primarily aimed at training students in the fifth year of the medical school – mandatory hematology course and optional course (all students in the Romanian, English and French section), fourth year pharmacy students (Romanian , French), AMG students and last but not least the hematology residents, and other doctors in trainting in various specialties.

At the same time, the research activity is an integrated and important part of the Hematology Department, all members being engaged in phase II and III clinical trials, participating as collaborators in various national and international grants. The research focuses on the study of malignant lymphomas, acute and chronic leukemias, multiple myelomas and myelodysplastic, myeloproliferative, lymphoproliferative syndromes, both in clinical trials and as individual concerns.

Over the years, the team of the Hematology Clinic of Timişoara has elaborated over 140 papers in extenso and over 380 papers in abstracts published in specialized magazines in the country, 10 papers in extenso and over 110 papers in abstracts published abroad.

The staff of the Hematology Clinic has a very good collaboration with the Pediatric Onco-Hematology Clinic of the Loius Ţurcanu Hospital led by Mrs. Conf. Univ. Dr. Arghirescu Smaranda in order to prepare, select and guide the patients with malignant hematological diseases twards the Transplant Unit for children and adults from Timişoara. The hematology clinic carries out its activity in close collaboration with all the University Clinics from Timisoara.

There are also close collaborations with other hematology clinics in the country such as Fundeni Clinical Institute Bucharest, Colţea Hospital Bucharest, University Emergency Hospital Bucharest, Oncology Institute Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuţă Cluj-Napoca, Oncology Institute Iasi, Hematology Clinics in Iasi and Craiova and abroad – Saint Loius Hospital Paris – Prof. Eliane Gluckman – Head of Medullary Transplant, Hammersmith Hospital London – Prof. Jane Apperley.

The Department members are part of a series of scientific and professional societies, such as: Romanian Society of Hematology, European Society of Hematology, International Society of Experimental Hematology, European Society of Genetics, Society of Immunology, Scientific Society of Medical Timisoara, Romanian Society of Medullary Transplant.
